If you have a half-inch dip and you think double-stacking cheap foam will fix it, you are making a massive mistake. Double-stacking underlayment creates a trampoline effect. The moisture barrier trap

Vapor emissions from a concrete slab can destroy laminate cores and degrade cheap underlayment if a 6-mil poly film is not properly sealed at the seams. In humid regions, the moisture comes up through the concrete. If you use a cheap pad that does not have an integrated vapor barrier, that moisture hits the bottom of your laminate. Expansion gaps allow laminate planks to expand and contract with changes in relative humidity, preventing buckling and joint stress. Laminate is a floating floor. It is not attached to the subfloor. It needs to move as a single unit. If you run the floor tight against the walls, it has nowhere to go when the air gets humid. It will push against the wall and the center will lift. This is another source of noise. A tight floor is a stressed floor. It will groan and squeak every time the temperature changes. You need at least a quarter inch, but I prefer 3/8 of an inch. People worry about the gap showing. That is what baseboards and quarter round are for. They cover the gap. But you cannot nail the baseboard into the flooring. You nail it into the wall. In the dry heat of Phoenix, your laminate floors will shrink, while in the swampy humidity of New Orleans, they will expand significantly. You have to acclimate the flooring to the room for at least 48 hours. I don’t care what the box says about it being ready to install. Open the boxes. Let the wood fibers reach an equilibrium with the local air. If you take flooring from a cold warehouse and install it immediately in a humid house, it will grow. It will grow enough to ruin your installation. The underlayment plays a role here too. A breathable underlayment in a dry climate can help prevent the core from becoming too brittle. In a wet climate, you need that vapor lock. I have seen hardwood floors in the Pacific Northwest cup because the installer didn’t account for the moisture coming up from the crawlspace. They used a cheap paper underlayment instead of a real vapor barrier.
