Why Your Shower Bench Shouldn't Be Built with Wood

The structural failure of timber in wet zones

I once spent three days in a bathroom in the heights of Seattle where the air smelled like a swamp because a previous contractor thought he could frame a shower bench using pressure treated 2x4s. The homeowner had paid for high-end marble. On the surface, everything looked pristine. When I touched the bench, the whole thing shifted a quarter inch. I pulled one tile off and the wood underneath was the consistency of wet oatmeal. The mold was so thick it had its own zip code. This is the reality of wood in a shower. Wood is an organic, hygroscopic material that will always attempt to reach equilibrium with its environment. In a shower, that environment is a constant cycle of extreme humidity and direct liquid contact. Even the best waterproofing systems fail eventually when the substrate underneath them is constantly expanding and contracting. You are building a structural sponge and then wondering why the grout is cracking.

The physics of vapor and wood rot

A wooden shower bench fails because wood has a high coefficient of expansion when exposed to moisture vapor which destroys the bond between the waterproofing membrane and the tile. This process is known as substrate instability. When wood fibers absorb moisture, they swell. When they dry, they shrink. In a bathroom, this happens several times a day. Most tile and grout are rigid. When the wood underneath moves, the grout lines are the first thing to give. Once the grout cracks, you have a direct highway for water to enter the framing. It does not matter if you use redwood or cedar. While those species are rot resistant, they are not rot proof. They still move. They still decay when trapped behind a layer of tile and thin-set where they can never truly dry out. This trapped moisture creates a micro-climate perfect for fungal growth. I have seen Douglas Fir studs turn into black mush in less than two years because of a simple pinhole leak in the liner.

Why grout can never be a raincoat

Grout is a cementitious product that is naturally porous and functions as a filter rather than a waterproof barrier. Many homeowners assume that because grout feels hard like stone, it is keeping the water out. This is a dangerous misconception. Grout absorbs water through capillary action. It then passes that water through to whatever is underneath. If that substrate is wood, the wood will suck that moisture in like a straw. This is why the TCNA (Tile Council of North America) has strict guidelines about what constitutes a stable substrate. Wood framing is acceptable for walls because walls have a vertical plane that sheds water. A bench is a horizontal surface. Water sits on it. Gravity forces that water down through the grout and into the framing. Even if you use epoxy grout, the thermal expansion of the wood frame will eventually cause a separation at the change of plane where the bench meets the wall. This is where the real damage starts.
