Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. That client had spent three thousand dollars on premium porcelain only to have the previous contractor slap it down […]
The hidden physics of a failing shower seal Shower door seals fall off because of structural deflection, poor surface preparation, and the use of low-quality acetic-cure silicones that cannot bond to porous grout. When a subfloor shifts, the glass alignment changes, putting mechanical stress on the adhesive bond until the polymer chains snap and the […]
The smell of rotten eggs in a bathroom is a warning sign that goes far beyond a simple plumbing annoyance. When you smell sulfur, you are detecting hydrogen sulfide gas, a byproduct of sulfate-reducing bacteria that thrive in the anaerobic environments found in clogged drains and stagnant water under tiles. As a flooring professional with […]
The smell of wet concrete and the sharp tang of a fresh saw cut are the scents of a job done right. Most people see a shower floor as a pretty mosaic of pebbles or marble. I see a complex hydraulic system that must fight gravity and surface tension every second it exists. I spent […]
Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. That is the reality of the trade. If the substrate is not dead flat, the finish material is doomed. […]
I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor would not click like a castanet. Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It will not. That same laziness kills shower floors. When you see a crack in the grout surrounding your shower […]
The subfloor secret that ruins luxury bathrooms Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. That same level of neglect is what leads to shower door leaks. […]
The physics of standing water on shower surfaces Most homeowners assume that a wet shower floor is simply a matter of bad luck or a dirty surface. It is not. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet, and that same level of […]
The Structural Failure of a Sinking Shower Tile Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. I have seen it all in twenty five years on my […]
The physics of the corner tile failure A loose tile in a shower corner typically fails because of structural movement, moisture infiltration, or improper thin set coverage. The corner is the convergence point of two planes, making it a high stress zone where deflection and thermal expansion frequently break the mechanical bond between the tile […]
