Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet because the homeowner wanted a high-end porcelain install over a slab that looked like the surface of the moon. […]
I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. That is the reality of this trade. Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I walked onto that site smelling like WD-40 and oak dust, ready […]
I smell like WD-40 and oak dust most days. My knees have permanent calluses from twenty five years of crawling across subfloors that were never as flat as the builders claimed they were. Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete […]
The physics of the impact site Fixing a chipped porcelain tile requires a moisture-resistant epoxy resin, color-matching pigments, and a high-grit diamond sanding pad to restore the vitreous surface. You must clean the substrate with denatured alcohol and ensure the porcelain body is dry before applying any polyester-based filler or UV-cured acrylic to the shower […]
The structural lie of a flat wall Shower tile failure usually begins at the substrate level where installers ignore the 1/8 inch deviation rule over a 10 foot span. When walls are not perfectly plumb or flat, the thinset mortar must vary in thickness to compensate, creating uneven tension during the curing process which eventually […]

It won’t. I have seen this same shortcut taken in thousands of bathrooms across the country. When you walk into your […]
I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I have seen it a thousand times where a contractor rushes the job and leaves a 1/4 inch dip […]
I once walked into a luxury master bathroom where the custom marble tiles were literally sliding off the wall like stickers on a hot car. The homeowner had spent twenty thousand dollars on stone, but the installer decided to skip the basic mechanics of a proper bond. I spent three days scraping dried thin-set off […]
Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. That job was a reality check for the homeowner who thought a quick fix was possible. When you deal […]
The 1/8 inch that ruins everything To tile a shower niche without raw edges you must master the 45 degree miter cut or use factory finished bullnose tiles. Mitering involves removing the clay or porcelain body from the back of the tile at an angle. This allows two finished faces to meet at a sharp […]
