The five dollar solution for squeaky hardwood joints I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor would not click like a castanet. The homeowner thought I was crazy until they walked on the finished product. It felt like walking on a bank vault. Most guys skip the leveling […]
You spent hours sanding that oak. You wiped it down with a tack cloth. The first coat looked like glass. Then you applied the second coat and suddenly it looks like the surface of the moon. This is the nightmare of every floor finisher. I once walked into a house where a 15,000 dollar wide […]
I once walked into a house where a $15,000 wide-plank walnut floor was cupping so bad it looked like a potato chip because the installer didn’t check the crawlspace humidity. But that was not the worst part. The homeowners had dragged a heavy mahogany dining set across the soft wood without a single ounce of […]
Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. The homeowners had spent twelve thousand dollars on a premium wide-plank laminate, but the installer they hired before me […]
I have spent twenty-five years on my knees with a moisture meter and a T-square. My hands are stained with resin and my lungs have tasted more oak dust than any man should. I once walked into a house where a $15,000 wide-plank walnut floor was cupping so bad it looked like a potato chip […]
I once walked into a house where a 15000 dollar wide plank walnut floor was cupping so bad it looked like a potato chip because the installer did not check the crawlspace humidity. That was a tragedy of moisture. But just as painful is seeing a pristine floor marred by hardened blobs of polyurethane construction […]
Why You Should Sand Hardwood with the Grain Not Against It I once walked into a house where a $15,000 wide-plank walnut floor was cupping so bad it looked like a potato chip because the installer didn’t check the crawlspace humidity. That was the initial diagnosis. But as I got closer and wiped away the […]
I once walked into a house where a $15,000 wide-plank walnut floor was cupping so bad it looked like a potato chip because the installer didn’t check the crawlspace humidity. It was a tragedy of structural engineering. That floor was gasping for air while the subfloor was a damp sponge. You learn quickly in this […]
A stripped screw in a hundred year old plank of white oak is not just a nuisance. It is a mechanical failure that threatens the integrity of the entire installation. I once walked into a house where a $15,000 wide-plank walnut floor was cupping so bad it looked like a potato chip because the installer […]
The ghost in the concrete slab Bamboo flooring cups despite low air humidity because the moisture is not in the air but trapped within the subfloor or migrating from adjacent wet areas like showers. This phenomenon occurs when a moisture gradient exists between the top and bottom of the plank. Even if your room feels […]
